AS OF writing time, yours truly is turning twenty-something in a few days. For me, this is one of those times during the year that I do these little self-assessments and reflections about things I have done, stuff I wish I could have accomplished, and more things I want to do.
Coming from a background that does not make so much fuss about birthdays, I've grown used to just breezing thru this supposedly special moment like it was just any other normal day. I remember spending my 18th birthday by taking exams in two major subjects back in the university while everyone else spent theirs with mentions of cotillions (that I only came to hear and know about when I was in the big city), 18 roses, and what-have-you's.
On my 20th birthday, I recall my mother sending me a text message a good few days after saying, "Ineh, baken et upay teenager nan buridek ko!" (Oh, my youngest is no longer a teenager!) And that was it. Point is, a birthday is just like any other day. And I was cool with that because that's what I've grown used to.
