It’s more than interesting how a crass comment about us Filipinos can ignite a rage so unfathomable that triggers us to become like released savages pouncing on fresh game. So it is witnessed yet again when this certain Devina DeDiva (whoever she may be) made headlines in our social sites by publicly posting in her Facebook page very racist comments on Filipinos being poor, smelly and toilet cleaners in line with a Filipina being newly-crowned as Miss World 2013.
Understandably, we react with vehemence. To be so wrongly labeled is something that can spark anyone to aggressively refute the ill notions directed towards us. Numerous individuals have reposted her screen-captured evidence of classlessness and ignorance with their own side comments of defiance. This has catalyzed a steady stream of comments that are meant to rebut her rude and brainless statements. But unfortunately, these refutations are also laden with uncalled for remarks (i.e. ugly, fat, saggy boobs, neurotic bitch, to name a few). In a way, we have stooped to leveling ourselves with her.
Noticeably, we do not take offense lightly. While it is human nature to react on impulse especially when agitated, this should not be a reason for us to throw similarly vulgar words. And disclaimer, I am not at all condoning her uncultivated view about us. She obviously needs to be educated. And we can do that by showing her who we truly are. We are a people of sophistication, dignity and morals. We are not ill-bred and foul-mouthed so hitting dung with more dung is not the way to do it.
We have to remember that this is the web. And the web is littered with countless individuals who are in dire need of attention who speak their minds no matter how unfounded and senseless these thoughts are. This girl’s statements are purely trash, but we are magnifying it to a level that we appear drastically affected by uncouth comments from a person without integrity. Not to be judgmental on her status as a person but who is she after all that we give her such an immense attention. No one would listen to her and say amen to her thoughts other than these uneducated (to borrow her term) individuals who support her (if there were any). But if it was a person with integrity who said some critical things about us, then that’s a different story. Mediocre comments from mediocre individuals do not deserve the ire and attention that we are giving them.
As proven, people around the world can state many bad things about our country and our people. But who are the people saying these? Are they worth our attention at all? And how should we react? Be uneducated animals who counterattack with endless posts filled with curses and cusses and thus indirectly prove them a point there?
Also, we should ask ourselves if we are not also prejudiced. Our very own people discriminate against each other. We are quick to assail an offender while overlooking our nation’s very own faults against one another.
Lastly, like the grace that another Filipina beauty has shown to have afforded her an international crown, let us act with class, sophistication, decency and as learned individuals to get that respect we deserve.
